When Rise CEO Matt Daigle arrived at the Passive House Ranch, he fell in love with the classic charm and the two pugs who greeted him. Welcome to the Passive House Ranch!
Homeowners Beate and Bern have created a state of the art modern home while preserving the structure’s original character. Their passive house has a classic ranch design with high-performance features that bring next-level comfort.
One of the most impressive features of the home is the hemp room. The walls are made of hempcrete, a solid building material made from a mixture of hemp fibers and a lime-based binder. Hempcrete is an insulating material that is fireproof, earthquake resistant, and non-toxic. It took 6 months to have the hempcrete room permitted since the material is still quite uncommon.
The Ranch’s native garden is more than beautiful. It provides an oasis for creates of all kinds and attracts native birds and bugs. Native gardens require less water and fertilizer, making them more efficient to maintain and more friendly to the local ecosystem.
Beate and Bern are proud to be early adopters of Passive House design. “What we’re doing, everyone is going to be doing in a few years’ time.” If environmentalism is important to you, they encourage you to take action at home. “Just do it and see what happens. It’s not a straight line, but you will get it done and the phone will start ringing”.
The Passive House Ranch if part of a video series that takes you inside inspiring sustainable homes including a collection of passive houses, LEED-certified homes, electrification projects, and more.
